Calcite is a natural birefringent material which with good optical properties from visible to near infrared, it has very excellent performance in high and low temperature environment. Although is a fairly soft crystal and is easily scratched, it is ideal material used as visible and near IR polarizers, such as Glan Thompson, and Glan Taylor Glan laser.
